Surrounded by a quaint town and vast national forest, Fontainebleau is one of France’s greatest château. Built in the Medieval Period, the castle quickly became a favorite residence and hunting lodge to the French elite.

Discover the great halls of Francois I, France’s first Renaissance king who invited Italian craftsmen and artists to create an elaborate array of rooms covered in stucco and paintings representing the King’s successes.

Henri II, Catherine de Medici, and Henri IV followed in Francois’ footsteps. They added indoor tennis courts, fountains, chapels and galleries dedicated to one of the greatest pastimes of the Kings, hunting.

After the French Revolution, Napoleon I used the château for various reasons, including the installment of a military school and the imprisonment of Pope Pius VII.
