Join us for an immersive 13-day deep dive into the life and legacy of one of history’s most compelling figures: Gilbert du Motier, better known as the Marquis de Lafayette. Experience a once-in-a-lifetime, private visit to La Grange, the historic home of Lafayette, followed by an intimate exploration of the Château de Versailles, reserved exclusively for your group on a day it is closed to the public. Conclude this extraordinary journey with a glamorous Gala dinner at the majestic Invalides.

As part of a small group of curious travelers, you will uncover the truth about this charismatic French nobleman, who was not just a soldier but a revolutionary thinker and visionary. His story is one of courage, idealism, and a relentless pursuit of liberty—a tale that resonates across centuries.

Born into privilege in 1757, Lafayette could have easily lived a comfortable, uneventful life in the courts of France. But his passion for justice and his belief in the Enlightenment ideals of equality and freedom drove him to extraordinary feats. At just 19, he defied King Louis XVI’s orders and sailed to America, offering his service to George Washington and the nascent fight for independence. Arriving as an eager volunteer, Lafayette quickly proved himself on the battlefield, earning Washington’s deep admiration. In fact, their bond became so profound that Lafayette was regarded as Washington’s “adopted son.”

Returning to France a hero, Lafayette didn’t rest on his laurels. Instead, he became a beacon of reform during the French Revolution. As a member of the Estates-General, he drafted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, a document inspired by the American Declaration of Independence and now enshrined as a cornerstone of human rights. His efforts to balance revolutionary fervor with order showcased his unwavering commitment to justice, even as France descended into chaos.

When you walk through France today, traces of Lafayette’s life are everywhere, from his château in Chavaniac-Lafayette to the grand boulevards of Paris where he debated the future of his nation. Each site holds a piece of his remarkable journey—a journey that forever linked France and America, shaping the ideals of freedom and democracy we hold dear.

This exclusive guided voyage will transport you into Lafayette’s extraordinary world, unveiling not only the man behind the legend but also the tumultuous history he helped shape. From his youthful zeal to his enduring wisdom, Lafayette’s story is one of courage, conviction, and an unwavering belief in humanity’s potential. Join us to uncover the life of this extraordinary man and see history through his eyes—a story guaranteed to inspire and amaze.

Chuck Schwam

Charles Schwam works as an account executive by day, and moonlights as an historian by night. Chuck, as he is known, came to the greater Washington DC area from Philadelphia to attend American University in the 1978 to study sports journalism. Shortly thereafter he found his skills better suited as an account executive instead of a broadcaster. For over forty years has been the leader in his industry, managing national and local accounts while maintaining the top position in sales and new business.

By 2011 he had joined the Board of Governors as Treasurer. Over the years his role has expanded to Executive Director and primary Event Planner for the annual conference and the publisher of the semiannual Gazette. Currently Chuck is the Chairperson of the AFL’s Bicentennial of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour 2024-2025. There are currently 40+ committees comprised of over 400 members across 24 states working actively to plan events, learning
engagements and experiences designed to bring awareness and education to the public of the legacy of General Lafayette and the French involvement in the American Revolution.

Chuck also led the American Friends of Lafayette’s effort to erect two statues in Yorktown, Virginia: Lafayette and Rochambeau.  Chuck oversaw the fundraising, the design and installation of these statues.  As an event planner, Chuck has planned over 100 commemorative events in the United States and France, ranging in size from a few to a few thousand attendees.

      Our Responsibility

The Bacchus and Clio Travel Company is your representative in securing the requested arrangements during your tour in France. The Bacchus and Clio Travel Company, its agents, and its employees act only as agents for the passenger regarding travel by road, or by mode of transportation or local conveyance within France and assume no liability for personal injury, property damage, loss, accident, delay or irregularity incurred by any person arising out of the negligence of an air carrier, hotel or person engaged in conveying the passenger, providing rental cars, or rendering any of the services or accommodation being offered during these tours; nor shall the Bacchus and Clio Travel Company be responsible for any injuries, death, damages, loss or delay in any means of transportation or because of any event beyond The Bacchus and Clio Travel Company’s actual control. The passenger must bear any such losses or expenses. The right is reserved to substitute hotels of similar category or change schedules without prior notice should circumstances require. In the event of a change of itinerary necessitated by factors or conditions beyond the actual control of the Bacchus and Clio Travel Company, such as strikes, political and social unrest, labor problems, climatic aberrations, or any act of God, no refund can be made, nor will credit be given, provided that in the event of such change, the Bacchus and Clio Travel Company shall offer accommodations and services of comparable quality and standards as outlined in the itinerary.

We have provided the contact details of a recommended air and travel insurance agent. We strongly advise utilizing their services to ensure coverage for any unforeseen issues that may arise.

      Changes and Modifications

A service charge per booking may apply for each change made after the initial booking request has been approved by you and the service confirmed by the Bacchus and Clio travel company with the supplier. Airlines and other vendors may assess cancellation fees for cancellations, which will be passed on to you. In some cases, suppliers of services may provide no refund, such as for accommodation. Once travel has commenced, any changes or cancellations are at your expense. Information will be given on request at the time of booking.
